Emma HamiltonEmma Tyler Hamilton was born in Boston to single mother, Lara Hamilton. Emma's mother was an Assistant Professor of Law at Havard University at the time she fell pregnant with her daughter. Following a passionate one night stand with married New York Psych Professor, Keith Miller, who was visiting Harvard for a conference, Lara discovered she was pregnant, and although the news came as a heavy burden to the young professional woman in the height of her career, she decided to keep the baby. Keith did not take the news well and told her he would give her money for the child but wanted nothing to do with it for fear he would lose his wife, who was already expecting his first child. Lara was devastated at first, but took it in her stride, raising her daughter alone and being nothing but proud of what she achieved. She never spoke to Keith Miller again, although his name was listed on Emma's birth certificate.
Emma grew up knowing just her mother and grandparents as her family. She never once had a yearning to know her father after her mother admitted to her when she was old enough what happened. However, her mother never told her that her father's wife had also been pregnant at the time of the one night stand. Emma didn't want to live her life harbouring a hate for a father that abandoned her, so she merely just accepted she didn't have a father. She grew up happily with a close relationship with her mother and went on from High School to gain a degree in Nursing from Harvard, specialising in Emergency Nursing. Simultaneous to her final years at Harvard, Emma completed her EMT training course and became a fully qualified Paramedic. She enjoyed the pace of the EMT work better than direct nursing and she soon gained a job as a Paramedic in New York City, which was only about a three hour drive from her home in Boston so she didn't need to cut ties with her family or be too far away from her mother.
Emma has been on her paramedic team, headed by Andrew Connor, for close to two years now but being a generally curious person by nature, she began to wonder a little about her father. She never had any intentions of trying to meet him, but she did want to know who he was on the off chance she might need a kidney one day or something. The internet can be a lovely tool at times, and Emma discovered some small pockets of information about the man who was nothing but sperm to her mother. What she never anticipated was to learn that Keith Miller had another daughter. The news sent Emma reeling and from then on, she couldn't stop thinking about the half sister she had out there. She tried for close to a year to locate the young woman who Emma only knew could possibly be called Evelyn, but the search was fruitless. The only thing she found was something that indicated Keith's other daughter may or may not be in Princeton. It had been enough of a link for Emma. If she was anything, it was persistent.
After discovering that little piece of information, Emma went to Andrew, her boss, and asked if he could maybe look into the possibility of her transferring to a team in Princeton. It took a good eight months for any vacancies to come up, but just before Christmas, Andrew told her there was an position opening in early April, and if she wanted it, he could arrange the transfer. She had nearly kissed him, but instead settled for hugging him and bouncing up and down excitedly. She started arranging for her move and in April 2009, left her much-loved New York EMT job for a new start in Princeton with hopes of locating the sister she never knew she had.
PERSONALITY Emma would probably be the first to describe herself as a bit of a plain jane. She doesn't see herself as anything special and feels a healthy social life has come up second to her job. She loves to work and could be classed as a typical workaholic. She accepts any extra shifts she gets called in for and is always the first to put her hand up to work holidays so her colleagues can spend time with their families. She is a very hard worker and is strongly determined to succeed in anything she tries. She is a friendly and sweet person, though she has a cheeky side that often comes through to show she's not as innocent as her exterior suggests. She has a large bunch of friends, mostly workmates, and answers to a range of affectionate nicknames such as Em, Ems, Emmie, or ET (a joke with her mates stemming from the initials of her first and middle names).
She doesn't live a flashy lifestyle, preferring instead to have a small, cosy home, with a small fuel-efficient car, and comfortable clothing. In her spare time, jeans and Converse shoes are her everyday uniform. She's a bit unlucky in love, only having experienced on truly serious relationship in her time which ended in a disaster when she discovered that her boyfriend was 'mommy's boy'. Not wanting to compete for his attentions with a middle-aged woman who couldn't cut the apron strings, Emma ended the year and a half long relationship. There has been a few other brief romances but she is yet to find anyone who has really swept her off her feet. She would class herself as 'content but looking', at risk of sounding like a cheesy personals ad. |
